In a landmark development for Canada's energy sector, LNG Canada is poised to dispatch its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipment from Kitimat, British Columbia, in July 2025. This event signifies Canada's entry into the global LNG export arena, with profound implications for both domestic energy dynamics and international markets.


Project Overview


LNG Canada represents a monumental investment in Canada's energy infrastructure. The project is a consortium comprising:


  • Shell Plc. (40%)

  • Petronas (25%)

  • PetroChina Co. Ltd. (15%)

  • Mitsubishi Corp. (15%)

  • Korea Gas Corporation (5%)


Collectively, these partners have committed approximately $40 billion to the development of a state-of-the-art LNG export facility in Kitimat. The initial phase includes two processing units, or "trains," designed to produce a combined total of 14 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG. Future expansions may see the addition of two more trains, potentially increasing output to 26 mtpa.


Strategic Significance


The commencement of LNG exports positions Canada as a key player in the global LNG market. Historically, Canada's natural gas exports have been predominantly directed to the United States. However, with the operationalization of LNG Canada, the focus shifts towards Asian markets, where demand for cleaner energy sources is on the rise. Central to the project's success is the Coastal GasLink pipeline, a 670-kilometer conduit transporting natural gas from the Montney Formation near Dawson Creek to the Kitimat liquefaction facility. Owned and operated by TC Energy, this pipeline underscores the integration of upstream gas production with downstream LNG processing and export.


Environmental Considerations


While LNG Canada is poised to boost economic growth and energy exports, it also brings environmental considerations to the forefront. The project is anticipated to be the largest point source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in British Columbia, with the first phase expected to emit four megatonnes of GHGs annually. This presents challenges for the province's legislated GHG reduction targets.


However, LNG Canada has committed to implementing advanced technologies to mitigate environmental impacts. By integrating energy-efficient natural gas turbines and leveraging renewable electricity from BC Hydro, the facility aims to emit less than half the GHGs of the average LNG plant currently in operation worldwide.
